Optomitry history dating back to early studies of 1300 optics and image formation by the eye. Benito Daza de Valdes has published a third book of Optometry in 1623 where he mentioned the use and fitting of glasses. These were later called optometrists.

In 1692, William Molyneux wrote a book on optics and lenses, where he said that his ideas about myopia and problems related to near vision. Scientists of Ptolemy and Johannes Kepler also contributed to the creation of optometry. Kepler discovered how the eyes retina creates a vision. From 1773 to about 1829, Thomas Young discovered the disadvantage of astigmatism and was George Biddell Airy, who designed the glasses to correct this problem, which includes spherocylindrical goal.

A pilgrim named Peter Brown, is considered the first person to use a pair of eyeglasses in the United States, however, the glasses were made only in Europe for a long period of time that makes them expensive and difficult to find. The first man to buy a pair of eyeglasses in the United States John McAllister Sr., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1783. McAllister, with his son, John McAllister Jr. began making glasses for the first time in the United States in 1811. His activity continued until late 1900. The family has also taught refraction, and one of his students, James W. Reina has also started his own company in 1853.

Benjamin Pike James Prentice and two other optometrists already studied in England and arrived in the U.S. in 1847. They taught their children, and his son James andCharles Prentice has an important role in the development of optometry in the United States.

He American Optometric Association was then formed after January 11, 1922 Morris Steinfeld hold a meeting with seven optometrists to discuss whether optometry must be a business or industry. Following this meeting, they formed the American Academy of Optometry with the vision to transform the whole body optometric to a profession with a scientific basis. The American Optometric Society was formed in August 2009. Doctors are concerned that political decisions that AOA leadership does not represent the majority wishes of the profession and was considered to be in the best interest of the profession.

The first schools of optometry in the US began in the late 1800s, with the Illinois College of Optometry in 1872, and the New England College of Optometry in 1894. In 1914, a program in optometry began at The Ohio State University after Professor Charles Sheard gave a presentation to the Ohio State Optical Association who assisted him financially to open the program. It started as a two-year course that later became a four-year degree-granting program. Until 1937 the program was known as Applied Optics, when it then became known as Optometry.
